Hair Salon by HAIR CLUB

Feb 2, 2016

Saturday, February 20 at 12pm at THE SUB-MISSION

THE SUB-MISSION presents a Hair Salon by HAIR CLUB, in conjunction with our current exhibition, “Gift Baskets by Occasion” by Kelly Lloyd, which runs through February 27. Hair Salons are casual conversation events; previous topics of discussion include Hair Myths + Cautionary Tales, Hair + Death, Hair as Material in Art, Hair as Form, and Hair + Fashion.

HAIR CLUB is a growing community of artists, writers, and scholars whose aim is to conduct a collaborative inquiry into the multi-valent topic of HAIR in our wider culture via conversation, publication and meaningful programming, and organizing HAIR-centered work across medium and discipline into thematic publications, exhibitions and events. This year our activities are made possible through a Propeller Fund Grant.

Suzanne Gold graduated from SAIC in 2015 with an MFA in Writing and Fiber and Material Studies. Her work in fiction and poetry collides with visual work and illustration to form a narrative rendering of a world just off the coast of real. A solo show of new large-scale prints entitled At your own risk opens at Chicago’s Comfort Station in April 2016.

Kelly Lloyd graduated from SAIC in 2015 with a dual MFA in Painting and MA in Visual & Critical Studies. Recent exhibitions include a solo show at THE SUB-MISSION, a two person show with Alex Bradley Cohen at Carrie Secrist Gallery and Ground Floor, the Hyde Park Art Center’s Biennial of Chicago’s MFA Graduates. Lloyd was recently named one of NEWCITY’S “Breakout Artists of 2015” and is participating in the Hyde Park Art Center’s “The Center” Program.

Michal Lynn Shumate is an MA candidate in Visual and Critical Studies at SAIC. Her research and writing, based largely in contemporary fashion, began at the University of Chicago with her undergraduate thesis in Art History, and she continues to write and lecture on the evolving practice and theory of fashion exhibition, historiography, and pedagogy.
