THE MISSION PROJECTS presents Natural Histories, an Artist Focus that assembles a collection of new and recent works by Anna Elise Johnson (Los Angeles, CA), Pablo Chiqui Garcia (Lima, Peru), and Matt Magee (Phoenix, AZ). Working across sculpture, painting, and assemblage, the artists investigate the Earth’s materials as both physical strata and conceptual frameworks, presenting a cross-disciplinary conversation that centers a shared interest in geology, Earth’s materials and composition, and the processes that have shaped the natural world over time.

Geology is often perceived as a static science — layers of rock, fossils of the past, the slow crawl of tectonic plates. Yet beneath this apparent stillness lies a vigorous narrative of transformation. The artists highlighted in Natural Histories engage with the geological not only as subject matter but as method, metaphor, and material. Some works draw direct inspiration from geological forms themselves while others reflect on how the Earth’s processes shape human experience. Through excavation, accumulation, and reconstruction, their works echo the transformative nature and quiet resilience of the Earth.

Natural Histories is on view from October 4 through December 13, 2025 at THE RESIDENCE. Collection visits available by appointment. Email rebecca@themissionprojects.com to schedule.
