Susan Giles in Conversation with James Yood

Please join us at THE MISSION on Saturday, October 14 at 3pm an artist talk between Susan Giles and James Yood. Giles and Yood will discuss Giles practice specifically related to her most recent series of photographs and sculpture in Swipe, Sweep, Flick, Fold. This event is second of two programming events for THE MISSION’s current two-person exhibition, Swipe, Sweep, Flick, Fold showcasing Chicago-based artists Jeroen Nelemans and Susan Giles.

JAMES YOOD teaches modern and contemporary art history and criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he is an Associate Professor and Director of the New Arts Journalism program. Active as an art critic and essayist on contemporary art, he has been Chicago correspondent to Artforum and writes regularly for GLASS magazine, art ltd., and Visual Art Source. Educated at the University of Wisconsin and at the University of Chicago, he has lectured on issues in modern art at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Terra Museum of American Art, the St. Louis Art Museum, the Akron Art Museum, the Museum of Art and Design in New York, the Columbus Museum of Art, the Boise Art Museum, the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, the Grand Rapids Museum of Art, the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Dayton Art Institute, the Spertus Institute in Chicago, the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, the Madison Art Center, the Speed Museum in Louisville, the Mint Museum in Charlotte, the Jewish Museum in Milwaukee, the Huntsville Museum of Art, and at many other venues. He serves as a writer and consultant to Encyclopaedia Britannica in modern and contemporary art and has been a regular correspondent to WBEZ National Public Radio in Chicago.

SUSAN GILES is in artist in sculpture and video living and working in Chicago, IL. She received her MFA from Northwestern University and a MA from The School of Art Institute of Chicago. She has recently exhibited solo exhibitions at Burren College of Art (Co. Clare, Ireland), PataPDX (Portland, OR), Zhulong Gallery (Dallas, TX), and Hyde Park Art Center (Chicago, IL). Her work has been in group exhibitions in Chicago at the Museum of Contemporary Art and The Renaissance Society as well as Mixed Greens in New York and Galeria Valle Orti in Valencia, Spain, among others. She has received several grants including an Individual Artist Project Grant from the City of Chicago’s DCASE (Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events) in 2015, an Illinois Arts Council Fellowship Award for Visual Arts in 2014 and 2009, a Louis Comfort Tiffany Award in 2005, and a Fulbright Grant in 1998 to Indonesia to conduct research on the intersection of tourism and culture in Bali. Giles is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Contemporary Practices at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
