Hunter Gather is pleased to announce the opening of Engines of Anticipation, a solo exhibition featuring a series of works by Houston-based artist Curtis Gannon, on Saturday, November 5th, 2016. Interested in the structure and imagery of American action comics, Gannon’s abstract collages, sculptures, and installations deconstruct the genre’s use of color, line, sequential narrative, and popular iconography in order to create a visual narrative.
“Comic book iconography offers a visual language that is recognizable and accessible by audiences from diverse backgrounds,” Gannon states, “and the medium itself represents a modern mythology that brings larger-than-life subject matter into the predictability of everyday life.” The body of work created for Engines of Anticipation specifically addresses the comic book’s elemental structure: closure, serial nature, and the sense of perpetual expectation. “Closure” is the duration of time that occurs within the small sliver of space between panels—the moment in which time and space become elastic and the reader must interact directly with the narrative in order to infer any omitted details.
Gannon graduated from the University of Houston with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, while simultaneously working for the Blaffer Gallery and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He later received a master’s degree in painting from San Diego State University. Gannon’s works have been in numerous exhibitions through out the United States, including the Lawndale Art Center, Sicardi Gallery, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, as well as the Marion Gallery in Panama.
