HOUSTON, TX, 10/29/13 - THE MISSION | Houston is pleased to announce a group show featuring large-scale objects and installations by Latin American artists. The exhibition assembles new works by Gustavo Díaz, Marcelo Grosman, Fernando Pareja and Leidy Chavez and opens Saturday, November 9. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, November 9th from 2:30 - 4:30pm. The show continues through Saturday, December 21, 2013.
The exhibition will feature recent works by Argentine artists Gustavo Díaz and Marcelo Grosman, including selected objects from Gustavo Díaz’s new body of work, universo 1”. Díaz investigates concepts and processes through systems theory, revealing their formal, functional, and operative properties. The resulting objects — elaborately assembled, three-dimensional Plexiglas acrylic reliefs — are hybrids of science and aesthetics. Marcelo Grosman’s new works are situated between sculptural moving objects and still pictures and examine the evolution from static to kinetic imagery. Lenticulars encased in LED light boxes, Grosman employs obsolete materials to evoke the illusion of depth. Drawn from instructional films based on the domestication of the body, the works possess the ability to change as the image is viewed from different angles.
Also included is a new installation, Leap into the Void, by Colombian artists Fernando Pareja and Leidy Chavez. Centered on three-dimensional animation, the installation is the artist duo’s U.S. premier. A companion installation will be on view at THE MISSION | Chicago.
