THE MISSION PROJECTS is proud to present BRAZILIAN MODERNISM 1950’ TO 1970’S. In its inaugural opening THE MISSION will exhibit Neo-concrete art from Brazil, showcasing the country’s most noteworthy artists of the movement. This exhibition will include art from Helio Oiticica, Lygia Clark, Mira Schendel, Alfredo Volpi, Ivan Serpa, Sergio Camargo, among others. The exhibition opens Thursday, September 16th and continues through the 28th of October.

Central to the Neo-concrete premise is the rejection of any a priori approach to creation. These artists, and in particular their advocate the poet and critic Ferreira Gullar, argued that creative practice could not be prescribed. Rather, any theory associated with the work would emerge as a consequence of the act of creation. Neo-concrete artist explored different ideas of space and the participatory social role of the spectator, marking a clear departure from both Brazilian and Russian constructivism.

THE MISSION PROJECTS serves as an independent space for curators, artists, and collectors to propose exhibitions of emergent to mid career artists. The underlying theme of THE MISSION is art of the Americas, but the space is not exclusive to art from a particular region, movement, or period. The inaugural year will focus on historical exhibitions of Latin American artists and movements, opening a dialogue between emergent artists and their predecessors; thus establishing a context for future shows.

THE MISSION will serve as a catalyst for innovation and exploration of the contemporary landscape.
