THE MISSION | Houston is pleased to announce Visual Novel, an exhibition of photographs by Argentine artist, Erica Bohm. In her showcase at THE MISSION | Houston, Bohm uses photography to narrate the infinite potential of imagination by traversing and documenting the depths of outer space. She synthesizes her vision from varied source materials — science fiction, astronomy, philosophy, and literature — to explore notions of time travel, astronomical phenomenon, and the connection between science and art.

Highlighted in Visual Novel are works from “GalÝ ctica,” a series of photographs featuring space modules and cryogenic chambers that the artist captured at a Houston-based NASA facility, the Johnson Space Center in National Aeronautics and Space Administration, during her Mapping Exchange Residency at the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art (Austin, TX). Also on view are “Planet Stories,” a series of Polaroids that the artist took of existing photographs that were also sourced from NASA, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Cameras (LROC), and Mars Science Laboratory websites. Bohm blends new technologies with outmoded means to encapsulate both the past and present. She explores the timeless bounds of the universe, emphasizing the perpetuity of depth and the potential of space to generate otherworldly landscapes.

Visual Novel also showcases a selection of architectural works in which Bohm decontextualizes the urban sprawls of the increasingly unnatural world. In “Cityspaces,” a series of photographs of Texas skyscrapers, Bohm continues her exploration of time, space, and perspective. In Houston Tower , a digital photograph on metallic paper, the skyscraper appears unstable yet monolithic and propels toward the sky, reaching towards the unknown, boundless depths of outer space.

I am interested in the connection between science and art, as the two ask me the necessary questions about the origin of the universe. This is a private story that includes history and science as well as combines fiction and reality. - Erica Bohm

Visual Novel opens at THE MISSION | Houston on Friday, July 25 and continues through Saturday, August 23, 2014. For more information, please contact Sarah Busch at sarahb@themissionprojects.com or 713-874-1182.
