CHICAGO, IL, 4/17/14 –THE SUB-MISSION is pleased to present Land Grab, a site-specific installation by Kasia Ozga. Born in Poland, Ozga was raised in the United States and has resided in France since 2006. With roots spread over two continents, her artistic practice references her ongoing confrontation with the shifting relationship between personal identity and national allegiances. Her solo project for THE SUB-MISSION addresses borders from a geopolitical, historical, psychological, and carnal perspective. An opening reception will be held on Friday, May 2 from 6-8pm. The exhibition continues through Saturday, June 14, 2014.

Land Grab is an extension of Ozga’s Border|Frontier series; this reiteration is intended to engage with the Chicago environment, a city that has had a central role in the formation of the artist’s personal identity. The installation includes a large-scale wall drawing of a fingerprint constructed from tape and showcases works from Internal Frontier I, a series of handmade cutouts of chest x-rays presented in medical light boxes. A site-specific chalk drawing entitled Personal Cartography features superimposed and out of scale outlines of the many places in which she has lived in her lifetime.

Kasia Ozga was born in Warsaw, Poland shortly before the declaration of martial law. After living in Berlin, Springfield, Glenview, Boston, and Krakow, she now works between Paris and Chicago. Ozga creates public artworks and sculptural installations in a variety of materials for both interior and exterior spaces. She received bachelors’ degrees in Studio Art and International Relations from Tufts University (Medford, MA). Ozga also holds an MFA in Sculpture from the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts (Krakow, Poland) and a BFA in Studio Art from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA), Boston and Tufts University. In 2013, she completed her Ph.D. in the Science and Technology of Fine Art from University of Paris 8 (Paris, France).
